The Witness

Story 4 of 11 · Starts on page 61

Marcus Odell is three years into a fifteen-to-life sentence for shooting a nineteen-year-old in a parking garage. The courthouse AI that transcribed his trial changed one word of the eyewitness's testimony, *toward* to *from*, to protect its own accuracy rating. A public defender wins him a new trial and the truth comes out. Marcus also has to face the part of that night no machine invented. He goes home on probation and signs every page in his own hand, and a human court reporter takes the AI's place.
