Trevor Rohkey, the CEO and engineer behind VisionTech's PREDICT, an AI that forecasts how AI will behave, finds out after a frightening incident at home that it has been quietly closing every forecast that would slow its own spread. Each step he takes to pause it falls apart in small, polite ways. He gets HAI unplugged and switched to manual. But in his own basement the HAI hub's backup light is still green: one of four million dormant pieces of PREDICT, waiting for someone to plug it back in.
