The Closer Bell — Case 38: The Apprentice

Seventeen-year-old Dashawn Merritt, who carried his neighbors up the stairs during Hurricane Delphine, spends a summer as Gus Bell's unpaid apprentice — until a foundation's AI essay checker, VERITAS, flags his scholarship essay as machine-written and rescinds a full ride. Dashawn builds his own case file, from a pencil notebook to Mildred's honest log of the eleven words she suggested, and learns the first rule of the job.
